Scientists in America say that they have found new evidence to suggest that acting on your hearing loss may actually preserve the function of the brain which backs up the old saying “If you don’t use it you will lose it”. According to the latest research documents, published in the recent edition of The Journal of Neuroscience, the density of the gray matter in the auditory areas was lower in people with decreased hearing ability than in those with normal hearing.

While a hearing loss alone is enough reason to use hearing aids, the results show that it also is damaging to the function of the brain.

Jonathan Peelle, PhD, the lead author of the study and a research associate in the Department of Neurology, said, “As hearing ability declines with age, interventions such as hearing aids should be considered not only to improve hearing but to preserve the brain.” He added, “People hear differently, and those with even moderate hearing loss may have to work harder to understand complex sentences.”

This new research sends a message to GP’s that there is more importance to treating a hearing loss, other than the direct affects of mishearing.
