Tinnitus

TINNITUS

Tinnitus is a perceived sound that occurs within the head or ears. The most common sounds reported are ringing, humming, buzzing, and a sensation of sound similar to an electric current. It can either be a constant or intermittent sound that is heard in one or both ears. Tinnitus can originate in the middle ear (behind the eardrum) or in the cochlea. The most highly regarded experts are not 100% sure of its true origin or cause. There is a “theory of tinnitus” that it is an asymptomatic phenomenon that is either related to reacting damaged hair cells within the cochlea. There is no cure for tinnitus, although there are therapies available to help ease the affects. Many causes are not known but there are some causes identified that can cause tinnitus.

Usually it is accompanied by ahearing loss, and sometimes by loudness hyperacusis (when moderately loud sounds are perceived in the brain as being very loud). Some 50 million adults suffer from tinnitus. For a quarter of them the problem is severe enough that it affects their daily life. Tinnitus can also be a symptom of a more serious disorders such as “Meniere’s Disease”, (an over production of cochlea fluids). An evaluation is necessary to determine the degree and impact on the tinnitus sufferer.

Tinnitus can have different affects on individuals. Some people can dismiss or learn to dismiss the sounds so that sleeping patterns are not disturbed. There is now clinical evidence to support the fact that some hearing loss sufferers can benefit as the amplified sound masks or eases the affects.

Some people can live with tinnitus but others who experience a more aggressive permanent sensation can become depressed to the point of suicide. Many who report sleep deprivation from tinnitus can sometimes find assistive masking devices useful. It can also affect concentration and is sometimes aggravated by stress.

Treatments can range from masking devices to counselling and even medication. There are various bodies that can advise you. You can even go online and meet others who suffer. For some people some things work and for others there is nothing that can be done. Speak to your doctor first and get advice from qualified people.
