Causes Of A Hearing Loss

The cause of a hearing loss is not always down to loud noise exposure or the aging process (Presbyacusis), it can also be attributed by hereditary conditions, some prescribed medications, viral, blood or heart conditions.  If a sudden loss of hearing occurs it must be investigated by a Doctor to rule out any possible medical problems.

Another cause of a hearing loss can be due to a perforation of the ear drum. This can sometimes be caused by cleaning your ears with a cotton bud or matchstick. It has been said by many a hearing aid dispenser that “the smallest thing you should put in your ear is your elbow”.  Small perforations of the ear drum can sometimes heal naturally, leaving signs of scarring. Larger perforations may have to be repaired by a surgical procedure called Tympanoplasty.

Excessive wax can be another cause of a hearing loss.  The ears naturally produce wax for many good reasons, as it acts as a barrier to catch loose particles of dust or foreign bodies, helps maintain a constant temperature and humidity necessary for healthy ear canals and plays an antibacterial role. The skin on the wall of the ear canal grows outwards or migrates towards the outside of the ear and as it does so, carries dead skin cells (keratin) and wax (cerumen), this action is called “the migration process”.  Sometimes the wax can occlude the ear canal and when this happens it should be removed for health reasons. Wax removal by a G.P or Nurse can sometimes improve a sudden hearing loss that has be caused by the excessive wax.
